MotoGP: Marquez in control at the Sachsenring

Since the start of the 2019 MotoGPTM World Championship, Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) has failed to go two consecutive races without winning. This weekend, true to form, the Spaniard bounced back from his Netherlands defeat to score an assertive victory at Germany’s Sachsenring where he was joined on the podium by Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol).

MotoGP™: Márquez scores 50th win at Brno

The Monster Energy Grand Prix České republiky – Round 10 of the 2019 MotoGPTM World Championship – saw Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda Team) claim the 50th premier-class win of his career. The Spaniard was joined on the Brno podium by Andrea Dovizioso (2nd, Ducati Team) and Jack Miller (3rd, Pramac Racing). Márquez is now 63 points clear at the top of the provisional Riders’ standings.

The start of the Monster Energy Grand Prix České republiky was delayed by 35 minutes after a shower swept over the circuit following the Moto2 race. The race was shortened from 21 to 20 laps and, for the first time this season, was declared ‘wet’.

Despite some lingering damp patches, all the riders opted for MICHELIN Power Slicks for the second start which saw Márquez defend his first place on the grid which he had earned the previous afternoon thanks to a spectacular pole-winning lap on slick tyres in drying conditions.

Meanwhile, Dovizioso leapt from fourth to second place, as Miller, Alex Rins (Team SUZUKI ECSTAR) and Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) tucked in behind.

Lapping on hard and soft MICHELIN Power Slicks front and rear, Márquez upped his pace for the second half of the grand prix to take the flag 2.452 seconds clear of Dovizioso (medium/soft MICHELIN Power Slicks front and rear). The performance and consistency of his Michelin tyres allowed the Honda star to post fast, consistent lap times en route to his sixth win of the season, his 50th at MotoGPTM level. Only Rossi (89), Giacomo Agostini (68) and Mick Doohan (54) have notched up a superior tally.

The fierce fight between Miller (same tyre choice as Márquez ) and Rins for third place played out in favour of the former who secured his footing on the podium two laps from home.

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) and Rossi were fourth and fifth, while Fabio Quatararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT), Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team), Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda) and Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) rounded out the day’s top 10.

The short shower that fell prior to the start made tyre choices complex but the decision to postpone the start by 35 minutes allowed everyone to fit MICHELIN Power Slicks, with most of the riders opting for a combination of medium and soft tyres front and rear.

Today’s result has extended Márquez’s lead in the championship to 63 and 83 points respectively over Dovizioso and Petrucci.
